Vere dressed upThis photograph looks as though it must have been taken somewhere on the Portobello Road – Vere lived nearby on Ladbroke Road. Few Eggs, as Jenny Hartley writes in her introduction, gives us ‘snapshots of daily lives they we ourselves might have led’. So whilst here Vere is dressed up with friends, this is her entry for 20th August 1940: ‘Very busy morning at King’s Cross with Miss Moyes [her employer at Greater World Association, a sort of community welfare organisation]. Great running to and fro. Lots of soldiers and sailors. Mr Churchill’s speech in the House of Commons. I listened to the summary of it on the 11 o’clock news: ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many and to so few.’ How well he puts things.’
