This is one of the lithographs from Edward Bawden’s Life in an English Village ie. Great Bardfield 1949. It was Tirzah’s world and she was very happy to be part of it. However, it stopped her doing other things and in particular it stopped her being an artist. Although one can (apparently) write an autobiography in three months in the evenings when the children are in bed, as she did, one cannot be a painter in the evenings alone. For that one needs light. However, we have Tirzah’s amazing wood engravings that she did before she was married; we have her decorative papers; we have the oil paintings and collages she did in the 1940s; and we have her autobiography: available from next Monday 17th by telephoning us or online from Wednesday 19th.
