Only five years after the Maudsley period Charlotte was painting portraits and family groups of this superb quality: The Knight Family (1979) is one of the highlights of the Mall Galleries show. Here is another excellent article about Charlotte and her life, this one by Mary Killen. Why her work is confined to one week in the (admittedly excellent) Mall Galleries when other much more minor artists have huge exhibitions at Tate Modern is a total mystery. But then how often have we said, why Dorothy Whipple isn’t dramatised and widely read when –––– is on every reading list is an equal mystery.
