Finally, an endangered church, St Paul’s, Boughton, Chester. From the outside you would not know that this Grade II* listed building incorporates an older classical church: the architect, John Douglas, who designed much of Chester’s famous Victorian half-timbered town centre, was a congregation member and rebuilt the church in his distinctive style, leaving little trace of what went before. The (apparently) stunning interior retains wall paintings and wonderful stained glass windows by Kempe, Frampton, Morris, and Burne-Jones. Although the back of the church is in an idyllic setting by the river, the front is on a main road; sadly, lack of car parking seems to be the main reason for the congregation abandoning their church since the necessary repairs (to the roof and the wiring) are not as major as in some endangered buildings.
