Masters of the Everyday: Dutch Artists in the Age of Vermeer is at the Queen’s Gallery, which is a particularly nice gallery to visit, the staff are so helpful and friendly, it is not crowded, and the paintings are beautifully hung. This is the closest most of us will ever get to the Queen but somehow by going there one does feel something of her aura. The exhibition is highly recommended for the dark days between Christmas and New Year (when, by the way, the shop is open as normal – although closed of course on the Bank Holiday, Monday 28th, and New Year’s Day). Card Players in a Sunlit Room by De Hooch is c. 1658.
