The simplicity of the Gollancz covers were (subconsciously) part of the inspiration for the Persephone Books ‘look’. And, curiously, several of our authors were in the Victor Gollancz stable: Betty Miller, Elizabeth Jenkins, RC Sherriff and others. This would be a good piece for the next Biannually: why VG had a ‘uniform’ look, whether it inspired Penguin, the philosophy behind it. Greengates has become one of our not exactly bestsellers, but in the top thirty: being about retirement, it will never appeal to everyone, but those who read it love it because, like all Sherriff’s novels, it has an unusualĀ and unforgettable quality.
